What New Siding Costs in Hampton Roads
Siding is priced by the square foot, which makes material look like the whole decision. It is not.

Siding quotes usually lead with a material and a square foot rate, which makes the decision look like a straight comparison between vinyl and fiber cement. The material does matter. It is simply not where most of the variation lives.
Material sets the floor
Insulated vinyl is the most affordable route and has improved considerably. It is low maintenance and, in its better grades, entirely respectable on the right house.
Fiber cement costs more, holds paint well, and keeps crisp lines through coastal humidity and sun. It is heavy and slower to install, and the labor reflects that.
Natural wood is the most expensive to buy and to keep, and on the right architecture nothing else looks like it.
The gap between these is real, but two quotes for the same material on the same house can still differ substantially. That difference is in the next two sections.
What is behind the siding
Siding is the visible layer of a wall assembly. Behind it sit the housewrap, the drainage plane, and the flashing at every window, door, and penetration. That assembly is what actually keeps weather out. The siding largely decides how it looks and how long the surface lasts.
When old siding comes off, what is underneath is not always sound. Water that has been finding its way in around a window for a decade leaves sheathing that has to be replaced. A quote that does not address what happens in that case is not complete.
This is also the one moment when those details can be corrected. Once the new siding is on, the flashing behind it is settled for the life of the cladding.
The parts that are easy to leave out
Trim, soffit, and fascia. The quiet third of the elevation. Replacing siding while leaving tired trim is visible immediately and permanently.
Gutters and the roof edge. Fascia, drip edge, and guttering all meet within a few inches of each other. Doing them together is how they end up watertight rather than negotiated between separate trades on separate visits.
Complexity of the elevation. Gables, dormers, multiple stories, and tight access all add labor, as does careful cutting around existing detail.
What it is reasonable to expect
New siding improves weather protection and, in insulated forms, makes a modest difference to comfort. What it mostly does is change how the house looks and stop the slow damage that failing cladding allows. Those are good reasons on their own, and better ones than an inflated energy claim.
The question worth asking any siding contractor is what happens when the old cladding comes off and the sheathing is wet. The answer tells you what kind of quote you are holding.
