Decks & Porches

Decks and porches, not afterthoughts.

Custom decks, covered porches, and screened porches for Chesapeake and Hampton Roads. Designed to the house, engineered for the coast.

How we approach it

It starts with the ground, not the boards

Grade, drainage, and how the deck meets the house settle the shape of the whole project. Board selection is the easy part and it comes later.

Read the ground first

How the yard falls away sets the height, the stair runs, and whether railings are required. On a sloping Hampton Roads lot this decides the design before anyone picks a material.

Pick the surface honestly

Pressure-treated is cheapest and needs the most upkeep. Composite costs more and asks for almost none. Hardwood is the most beautiful and the most demanding. All three are defensible.

The ledger is the risk

Where the deck attaches to the house is where water gets in and where failures happen. It is flashed properly and inspected before a single board is laid over it.

A deck and a porch together

Many houses want both: open deck for the sun, screened structure for the evenings. Designed together they share a roofline instead of looking like two projects.

What we build

Deck, porch, or screened room

Each serves a different life outdoors. We design around how you will actually use the space, then build it to last in salt air and summer storms.

Open decks

Sun, simplicity, and the yard. Composite, PVC, or natural wood decking on properly engineered framing, with railings chosen for the architecture.

Covered porches

A roof changes everything: shade at noon, shelter in rain, and a true outdoor room that extends the house's own roofline and trim.

Screened porches

The Hampton Roads evening, minus the insects. Screened rooms make three seasons of the year genuinely livable outdoors.

Built like the house

Footings, framing, flashing, and ledger details are structural work. We engineer, permit, and build them with the same care as any room inside.

Go deeper

Decking, screening, and enclosing

Composite decking covers the low-maintenance route. Screened porches give back the evenings. If there is already a patio and roof, enclosing it is often the shortest route to a room.

Good to know

Decks & porches, answered

What do you build decks and porches from?
Pressure-treated and hardwood framing with composite, PVC, or natural wood decking, matched with railing systems chosen for the architecture. Materials are selected for how they wear in coastal Virginia weather, not just how they photograph.
Covered porch, screened porch, or open deck?
Each serves a different life. Open decks maximize sun and simplicity; covered porches trade sky for shade and shelter; screened porches make the space livable on insect-heavy evenings. We design around how you will actually use it.
Do decks need permits and inspections?
Yes. Footings, framing, and railings are structural, life-safety work. We engineer, permit, and build to code as one continuous effort.
