Fiber Cement Siding

Fiber cement siding, cut to a crisp line.

Fiber cement siding for Chesapeake and Hampton Roads homes. It holds paint, keeps its edges in coastal weather, and asks for the precision we would give it anyway.

How we approach it

Heavier, and worth the trouble

Fiber cement holds paint for far longer than wood and does not move like vinyl. It is also heavy, dusty to cut, and unforgiving of a careless installation.

01

Density is the point

The material is dense enough to hold a crisp painted edge and to shrug off Virginia sun. That density is also why it needs to be handled properly on the wall.

02

Smooth or textured, and the trim

Smooth reads contemporary, woodgrain reads traditional. Wide trim boards in the same material keep the whole wall consistent.

03

Cut edges get primed

Every field cut exposes raw material and every one of them is sealed. Skipping this is invisible on handover day and obvious three winters later.

A wall that stays put

Consistent exposure, backed seams, and paint that holds. The finished wall should still look like this in a decade.

What we install

The premium cladding, and why

Fiber cement costs more to buy and more to hang. What it buys is an elevation that still looks deliberate in fifteen years.

It holds a line

Crisp edges and flat faces that stay that way through coastal humidity and sun. On architecture with fine trim detail the difference against lighter claddings is visible from the street.

It holds paint

Factory-finished boards arrive coated and keep that finish for many years. Site-painted boards give exact colour control at the cost of repainting sooner. Which suits you depends on how particular you are about colour.

Heavy, and slow to cut

The material demands precision and time, and that is labor. A quote that prices fiber cement like vinyl is either mistaken or planning to rush it.

Trim as part of the composition

Corner boards, casings, frieze, and reveals are drawn with the siding rather than chosen afterwards. Fiber cement rewards that discipline more than any other cladding.

The comparison

Fiber cement or vinyl

Vinyl is the more affordable route and asks less of you afterwards. Fiber cement costs more and looks better doing it. See siding and gutters, or what new siding costs.

Good to know

Fiber cement, answered

Why choose fiber cement?
It holds paint well, keeps crisp lines through coastal humidity and sun, resists impact and fire, and it does not soften or warp. On architecture with fine trim detail it looks markedly better than the alternatives.
Why does it cost more to install?
It is heavy, it cuts slowly, and it demands precision. That is labor, and a quote that prices fiber cement like vinyl is either mistaken or planning to rush it.
Does it need painting?
Factory-finished boards arrive coated and hold that finish for many years. Site-painted boards give you exact colour control at the cost of repainting sooner. Which is right depends on how particular you are about the colour.
Will it look like wood?
Closer than vinyl, and it is not wood. Smooth boards read crisp and architectural, textured boards read closer to grain. We would rather set the expectation now than after the elevation is finished.
